Engineering Fails

This page is a collection of engineering fails that I have seen or experienced.

Cracked nuts

These were found inside the the wiring box for a small 3 phase motor. I guess this is what happens when you over-tighten poor quality nuts!

Creative Wiring

A Turnigy charger that I bought from HobbyKing was showing a DOA (Dead-on-Arrival) failure and was refusing to charge any LiPo packs.

Looking inside reveals the problem.

Two diodes were soldered vertically onto pads, the ends of which were soldered together and also to what looks like a resistor, which then connects to a piece of wire, which then connects to the side of a SMD capacitor. This might have all worked if the piece of exposed wire didn't also short to the adjacent pad!

Another piece of dodgy engineering - since the cooling fan was so close to the PCB, there was no room for the air to go - so a slot was hacked into the side of the fan.
